Top 5 tips for making friends at Greenbelt festival.
As the UK’s largest offline Christian dating agency we know a few things about meeting new people.
You may be reading this in the car, or onsite surrounded by friends and family. Either way, meeting new people in a field surrounded by music is a cornerstone of the British festival experience.
Here are our 5 steps to making new friends at this weekend’s Greenbelt festival.
1. Make eye contact and smile
Sometimes a simple smile through a crowd is enough to spark an engaging conversation. Even when you get talking, keep smiling and making eye contact with somebody: you will exude friendliness, and they will be more receptive to your friendship, which is always a good start.
2. Introduce yourself.
The easiest part of striking up a conversation at a festival is that you are amongst like–minded people. If you are watching Sinead O’Connor, chances are the person stood next to you, whether you know them or not, will have an opinion on the set, or the latest album. Don’t be shy; after all it is a festival, people are here to relax and enjoy themselves, and so are you. Start a conversation.
3. Forget your phone.
Figuratively speaking. If you want to make a good impression, switch it to airplane mode at the start of the conversation to minimise your distractions. There is nothing worse than speaking to someone who is focussing half of their attention on a phone rather than their full attention on you.
4. Who when what why how.
Use these 5 little words to get people talking. Combine these with point 1 and you have a winning formula for making friends. Ask open-ended questions that people can elaborate on easily, and let them finish before you ask another. Remember it’s always better to be interested, not interesting.
5. Be yourself.
That said, don’t forget to tell people your story – and make sure it is yours. If you are looking to build a long–term friendship it’s better to be genuine – open up to people and they will open up to you. Talk about things you are enthusiastic about as enthusiasm, like laughter, can often be contagious.
Overall – and this goes without saying – enjoy yourself! Dance, high five people, share food, help others, and get into the spirit of the festival, that’s why you are there.
